Why Even Experienced Landscaping Business Owners Need Outside Perspectives

Landscaping business owners

Even experienced landscaping business owners need outside perspectives because no one can see every opportunity, challenge, or solution from inside their own business.

The longer you've been in business, the more problems you've solved and the more confident you've become in your decision-making. That's valuable, and it's one of the reasons your landscaping business has made it this far.

But we all have blind spots.

We’re often surrounded by the same ideas, the same assumptions, and the same ways of approaching problems. Over time, it gets harder to recognize new opportunities because you're viewing them through the lens of what's worked before.

I've found that the landscaping business owners who continue growing are the ones who stay curious enough to challenge their assumptions, explore new ideas, and learn from people who see the industry differently.

No matter how successful your landscaping business is today, there will always be another perspective, approach, or solution you haven't considered yet.

And sometimes, a single conversation is enough to change the way you think about your business entirely.

What Blind Spots Can Hold Back Your Landscaping Business?

The blind spots that hold back a landscaping business are often the assumptions, habits, and frustrations you've accepted as normal.

You get bogged down in the day-to-day of running your company. You're focused on serving clients, managing projects, leading your team, and keeping everything running smoothly.

When you deal with the same challenges long enough, you stop questioning them.

Challenges & Assumptions

Blind Spots

Clients don't want to pay for design.

Maybe they don't understand the value of design yet.

Crew turnover is unavoidable.

Maybe another company has found a better way to retain people.

Margins are tight for everyone.

Maybe someone has built a more profitable model.

Hiring is difficult no matter what you do.

Maybe another operator is attracting talent differently.

Homeowners don't understand the value of what we do.

Maybe the industry hasn't found the right way to communicate it.

Sometimes we hold these assumptions that have gone unchallenged for so long they've started to feel like facts.

That's what makes blind spots so difficult to spot on your own.

When you're looking at the same business, the same challenges, and the same assumptions every day, it's hard to see another way forward.

Sometimes it takes someone outside your business to show you what you've been missing.

Why Are Other Landscaping Business Owners Often Your Best Source of New Ideas?

Other landscaping business owners are often your best source of new ideas because they're solving similar challenges from a different perspective.

No two companies operate exactly the same way. Different markets, client expectations, team structures, and service offerings force owners to find different solutions to common problems.

That's why conversations with other operators can be so valuable—they can shine a light on your blind spots.

You might be struggling to charge for design work while another company has built an entire process around communicating design value. You might be dealing with crew retention challenges while another owner has already developed systems that improve employee engagement and longevity.

The opportunities hiding inside your blind spots can show up in every part of your landscaping business:

  • Client communication process that reduces confusion, delays, and change orders.
  • Sales approach that helps homeowners understand the value of design before discussing price.
  • Maintenance program that improves retention and creates more predictable recurring revenue.
  • Project management system that keeps multiple trades aligned on complex projects.
  • Hiring and onboarding process that attracts stronger candidates and reduces turnover.
  • Pricing model that improves profitability without increasing project volume.

The goal isn't to copy someone else's landscaping business. The goal is to get an outside perspective that approaches your problem from an entirely different point of view.

The right conversation can save you years of trial and error.

When you expose yourself to different perspectives, you start seeing options you may not have considered before. A challenge that feels unsolvable can suddenly look very different when someone else explains how they approached it.

What One Conversation Taught Me About Outside Perspectives

One conversation taught me that outside perspectives can completely change how you think about a familiar challenge.

I recently talked with an American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) president about a session we'll be exploring at SYNKD Live Phoenix: water conservation.

As soon as I mentioned water conservation, the conversation moved to plant selection. But I explained that I wasn't thinking about water conservation as a plant conversation.

I was thinking about it as a system.

When I think about conserving water, I'm thinking about grading, hardscape, soil, drainage, irrigation, plant material, and how all of those elements work together across an entire property.

Water conservation is the result of hundreds of decisions working together.

As I explained that perspective, she stopped and said, "Oh wow, I'd love to hear more about that."

This wasn't a conversation between a beginner and an expert. We both brought years of experience to the discussion, yet a simple shift in perspective opened the door to a completely different conversation.

What Does Duane Draughon's Story Reveal About Continuous Learning?

Duane Draughon's story reveals that the best landscaping business owners stay curious, no matter how much experience they have.

Duane Draughon, founder and principal designer of VizX Design Studios, has spent years challenging the way people think about outdoor living. During a conversation on the SYNKD podcast, he said, "I don't think America even understands what outdoor living is."

Throughout his career, Draughon has questioned assumptions that many people in the industry accept without thinking twice:

  • He challenged the idea that outdoor spaces should be designed around products instead of people.
  • He questioned why outdoor living is treated differently from other parts of the home.
  • He pushed for a more integrated approach to design that focuses on how people actually live.

He didn't arrive at those ideas by staying inside the same echo chamber; he actively sought out new perspectives.

He studied architecture and explored European approaches to outdoor living. He looked beyond what was common in his local market and asked what was possible. Those experiences shaped the way he thinks about design today.

Keep asking questions.
Keep challenging assumptions.

And stay curious enough to learn from people, places, and experiences outside their own day-to-day reality.

That's where the best ideas come from.

Why Do the Best Landscaping Business Owners Never Stop Learning?

The best landscaping business owners never stop learning because the industry continues to evolve, no matter how much experience you have.

The landscape industry looks very different today than it did even a decade ago. No one can keep up with all of those changes alone.

That's why I believe some of the most valuable learning happens outside of formal education. It happens through conversations with people who are solving different problems in different markets.

Those conversations expose you to ideas you wouldn't encounter on your own.
